Headlamp diagnosis on Durango

This was a diagnosis of the lighting system used in a 2003 Dodge Durango. It uses a module called a "Central Timer Module" to interface with the rest of the vehicle's electrical system and gets inputs from the door locks, horn, wipers and other accessories. A typical problem when these go bad is the passenger-side headlamp will be dim and the headlamps will also "flash" before they fail completely. You can get the modules relatively cheap online (used) for less than $100. There was actually a recall for this problem for certain VINs and production dates for about a month or so in late 2002. If you have this problem and your VIN is correct, the dealer will fix the problem for free since the dim headlamp was determined to be a safety issue.

  1. Lighting and other systems which use electronic circuitry to control and manage them is getting increasingly more commonplace in late-model vehicles. They requires knowlegable technicians who can use diagnostic tools and read electrical schematics to correctly diagnose and repair these systems. Steve Storey of Car Inspectors is ASE Certified in Electrical and Electronics Systems and this together with his expeience troubleshooting and repairing electronic systems in the Grumman A6E aircraft while in the Navy makes him more than qualified to troubleshhot and repair virtually any electrical or electronic system which comes his way. Visit the Car Inspectors website at car-inspectors.com for more information. Thank You.
